Best Baguette in Paris 2013 by Ridha Khadher from Au Paradis du Gourmand

Ridha Khadher wins the Best Baguette in Paris competition

Sacrebleu! The streets around Sacre Coeur can no longer claim the best baguette in the city. For the first time in 6 years, the winner is not from Montmartre. The 14th arrondissement is the new home of the champion baguette made by baker Ridha Khadher of Au Paradis du Gourmand.

Our editor Meg Zimbeck fulfilled a dream by participating as one of the judges in today’s competition. More than 204 baguettes were delivered to 7 rue d’Anjou on the Ile-Saint-Louis, but only 152 of these met the criteria for length and weight. Meg will be reporting on the process and criteria just as soon as she recovers from her carb-induced coma. For now, here are your top ten results…

  1. Thank you for the article and the nice picture. It really makes me want to take the metro and taste the winning baguette. But please, guys… Nobody says “sacrebleu” in France anymore, not since the 18th century… The era of the three musketeers is long gone. Fortunately, the baguette remains!

  2. Visited this years winner yesterday. No queue luckily, but they were filming. It was a great baguette, no chewing gum texture. Everyone seemed so happy. I think it is nice that an unknown baker won, rather than someone who already has fame. I’m sure they will benefit from it for years, I suppose it’s a bit like winning the lottery for them.

  3. Wow, I have to say I’m sort of shocked that the #3 baguette is on my block and I’d say it’s only my #3 choice in the neighborhood! I walk 10 minutes (oh boo hoo, poor me) because I prefer the baguette from the 2004 winner, La Fournée d’Augustine.

  4. Meg was ( and will always be!) one of my best memories of Paris….as she breezed in to Eric Keyser that damp morning to whisk us to cheese shops, bakeries and a wine shop…it was our second best day in Paris..sorry Meg….Monet’s gardens trumped you! But not my much! Have a wonderful day eating …and eating and eating……
My husband and I were with you just about one year ago…sigh………as I celebrated my birthday sipping champagne and watching the lights twinkle on the Eiffel Tower. One more sigh………
