Five Great Steak Frites

By Meg Zimbeck On August 8, 2011

Where can you score a great steak frites in Paris? We asked our contributing advisors – a group of Paris-based food writers – to name five favorite places for a steak frites fix. The overall favorite: Le Severo.

The Daily Bite: Gueules not great, gout not out

By Barbra Austin On May 12, 2011
  • Pudlo gushes that L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon is “the standard measure of Parisian quality,” while conceding that there is plenty to dislike, including a chef in absentia, an ever-changing staff, and that fact that reservations are only accepted for the first seating. But by “miracle,” he says, “everything functions.” I think it’s safe to say that GP has never been made to wait for a table here. [Gilles Pudlowski]
  • Aaron is not impressed with the wine program at Les Fines Gueules. “Not a single staff member seemed to know or have any influence over the wine list,” he realized when trying to find out if there were any hipster natural sparkling wines were available. Also? “There are only six whites. There’s a weird price jump throughout, with seemingly no wines in stock priced between 32€ and 60+€.” [Not Drinking Poison]

The Daily Bite: Teaching the French about tacos and pie

By Meg Zimbeck On April 25, 2011

Trends

  • D-Leb reports that it’s almost becoming normal to find good Mexican food in Paris, but that some French people are still confused about how to eat it (see also: hamburger). He cites El Nopal, Candelaria, Rice & Beans, Itacate and Boca Mexa in this latest round-up. [David Lebovitz]
  • Pierrick Jégu joins in to (we hope) get his hands dirty at Candelaria, calling this new Mexican “the place to be” in the northern Marais. [L'Express]
  • The fast Mex behemoth Chipotle will open in 2011 at 20 boulevard Montmartre in the 9th. [Fast and Food via David Lebovitz]

The Daily Bite: Rats, Can (of Whiskey), RAP

By Meg Zimbeck On January 19, 2011

    Trends

    • The vermin are back. Paris’ préfecture de Police has reported a significant increase in the number of complaints about rats, which are estimated by exterminators to number six million in the metropolitan area. [eVous]

    Happy Plates

    • Emmanuel Rubin gives (out of 4) to Le Pantruche and praises the same dish – coddled egg on a bed of baby leeks – that Alec Lobrano loved last week [Le Figaro]. Pudlo offers a photo of the egg in question and calls Le Pantruche “cheap, fun, fresh, and well done.” [Gilles Pudlowski]

Our Guide to Paris: L’Atelier Saint-Germain de Joël Robuchon

By Our Paris Guide On August 8, 2010

If, when sitting at the counter in this red and black-lacquered dining room, you have the feeling you could be in any major city, it’s because you could be; there are “ateliers” around the world, from Vegas to Hong Kong. Note: Reservations are ONLY accepted for the first seatings of each service. Otherwise, it’s first-come-first-served.
