Trends
- The current issue of A Nous Paris is devoted to the Big Apple, and their roundup of addresses where you can “vivre New York” without leaving Paris includes Joe Allen, Cupcakes Berko, and Thanksgiving epicerie. Another article in the same issue profiles Bob’s Kitchen & Juice Bar, Merce and the Muse, and Sésame.
- There’s almost no repetition between their selections and an article published last summer by Le Figaro called ”Des Cantines Comme à Brooklyn,” which highlighted H.A.N.D., Razowski, American Bistrot, Floors, Ellis Island Café and other places where we wouldn’t be caught dead.
Happy Plates
- Pudlo waxes poetic about Laurent, praising the truffled fregola, cod with truffled brandade, and calling the churned-to-order vanilla ice cream (not truffled) the best in Paris. Sing it with me: “Aux Champs Elysées…” [Gilles Pudlowski]
- Noodle addicts embarrassed about being seen yet again at Happy Nouilles should consider heading to Le Wenzhou, in the rarely-visited Chinese quartier on rue de Joinville in the 19th. [Croque Camille]
Down the Hatch
- D’Oh! Duff beer will soon be available in France for all your ironic binge drinking needs. [Bonne Nouvelle]
Trends
- In the same week that the American cupcake chain Crumbs was acquired for $66 million, a French pastry trade website put out a newsletter entitled “Faut-il faire des cupcakes en pâtisserie artisanale?” which translates roughly to “Dear God, do we really have to make these cupcakes?!” [The Food Section]
The appeal of Merce’s uber-cool upper Marais café lies in both its style (a very deliberate mix of retro furnishings and fixtures) and its substance (fresh and colorful salads, American-style bakery goods, and some of the best espresso in Paris).
