Le Coq et Fils

Le Coq Fils restaurant in Paris in Montmartre roasted chicken

Chef Antoine Westermann ran the three-star Alsatian restaurant Le Buerehiesel for nearly four decades before asking the Michelin Guide to remove them in 2007. Five years later, he opened Le Coq Rico at this location in Montmartre – a restaurant dedicated to serving well-raised heritage chickens (and other poultry). He found a partner to expand in New York, that partner kicked him out of the company, and he returned to rename this Montmartre location Le Coq et Fils. Backstory aside, this is a destination for chicken that has has first been slowly cooked in broth and then roasted until golden and crispy. You can order a single plate (1/4 bird) for 25€, share a whole bird among 2 people for 83€, or share a prized heritage breed (poulet de Bresse, coucou de Rennes) among a larger group for prices that range from 128-152€. There are a few vegetarian options on the menu, but this is probably best enjoyed by a group who are all down to devour the bird. On a recent visit, the crowd was entirely American before 8pm, and fully French by the end of the night.

We included Le Coq et Fils among our favorite restaurants in Montmartre
