Le Grand Véfour, the gilded Directoire dining room tucked under the arcades of the Palais-Royal, opened in 1784 and spent two centuries as the address where Paris came to be seen — Napoleon and Joséphine, Colette, Cocteau — before a long decline. Now Paris Society and chef Bruno Doucet have revived it, and the difference is real: jubilant service, a serious Burgundy-led cellar, and a beautifully restored room lit by candlelight even at midday.
The cooking has genuine high points — a craveable foie gras with smoked eel, a satisfying skate wing, consistently strong sauces — alongside a few misses. At roughly 125€ before wine the food isn’t transcendent. But that isn’t quite what you’re buying here. You come for the room, the history, and the ceremony — the occasion as much as the plate. Go for a milestone, and you’ll likely feel grateful as you pay the bill.
