PREVIOUS REQUIREMENTS AND DISCUSSION

UPDATE: Thanks to a significant drop in cases, France will no longer be requiring the health pass as of March 14, 2022.

What’s a pass sanitaire?

In August 2021, France implemented rules requiring a pass sanitaire or health pass for entry into museums, bars, restaurants, trains and other public spaces. You can qualify for a health pass by being fully vaccinated. For now this means having received 2 shots and a booster shot, in most cases.

The latest rules

The rule in effect since February 15 is that the booster shot is required if it has been four months since your completed your vaccine (your second shot, for two-dose vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna).

If you have had your booster, it doesn’t seem to matter if that booster was two weeks ago or eight months ago. The point is that you’ve been boosted (their rules are designed to encourage the booster). For the moment, France is not requiring anything more than one booster, no matter how much time has lapsed since your booster. So if you’re traveling in August 2022 and worried that too much time will have passed since your booster, sit tight. The rules will likely change by then and we’ll update this post when they do.
There are some options for non-vaccinated individuals but we’re not going to discuss them.

How do locals get it?

For vaccinated locals, obtaining a health pass is simple: vaccines administered in France are accompanied by a QR code that can be easily scanned by your phone into a free app called TousAntiCovid (united against Covid). Once you have scanned your vaccine documents into the app (available in English), your phone can then be scanned by anyone checking health passes at an entry point. This isn’t so different from waiters checking paper vaccination cards in New York or other cities that require these – it’s just higher tech.

*You can also obtain a health pass with a negative COVID test administered in France, but this is only valid for 24 hours. It’s more annoying to get retested every day than to convert your vaccine card.

But what if you’re traveling?

You don’t have to be French or to have been vaccinated in French to get a pass sanitaire, but it does require an extra step upon arrival. If you have a paper vaccine card without a QR code (like those issued in the United States & Canada), you’ll need to show your documents and convert them into “vaccine equivalency health pass” that is scannable.

*This is true even if you come from a state (New York, California and others) that has its own scannable QR code. It won’t be readable by the French scanners and you’ll still have to go through this process.

Throughout the fall of 2021, there was a great deal of confusion about how to do this. There’s a much clearer system in place now that this conversion is being done by local pharmacies. Here’s what to expect:

Find a pharmacy to convert your documents into a French health pass. Visit this page (in English) from the Ministry of Health and scroll down to find the map of pharmacies who will convert foreign vaccination cards into a health pass. Zoom in to Paris (it’s the big circle in the top-center of the country showing more than 1000 pharmacies) and zoom into an area that’s convenient for you. Note the address and hours of the nearest pharmacy, and grab a few back up options, too.

From the map on this page, zoom in to Paris & your preferred area

Bring your paper vaccination documents showing that you are fully vaccinated, which in France means that at least 14 days have passed since the second shot for two-shot vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca) or at least four weeks have passed after the shot for one-shot vaccines (Johnson & Johnson).

Bring your passport. A driver’s license might be accepted as ID, but they’ll feel much better if you show your passport.

Go up to the register and ask for “une attestation d’équivalence vaccinale” or just say “bonjour” (hello!) with a big smile and hold up your passport and vaccine card and say “s’il vous plaît?” (please).

Bring money (cash or card) because most pharmacies are charging a fee for this conversion. The fee varies from place to place but cannot exceed 36€.

Download the TousAntiCovid app and scan the paper you receive at the pharmacy into the app. Once you get the thumbs up (see below) you can show your phone and your ID for entry at restaurants, bars, museums and other spaces that require the pass. If you don’t feel like using the app, you can carry around the paper copy from the pharmacy with the QR code, along with your ID.

About Janssen: This process is not working seamlessly for those with single dose vaccines like Janssen. The QR code/app seems to be set up to read the single dose of Janssen plus a booster as 2/2 shots, with a booster still required. Scroll down to the comments for more discussion about this.

If you already have a pass sanitaire from a previous trip (lucky you!) and need to add your booster shot to the existing pass, you’ll have to go to a pharmacy and pay a fee to do it.

But is this really necessary?

It may feel like a drag to find a pharmacy and to set aside half an hour to get this done at the beginning of your trip. You may have heard that lots of places are accepting paper vaccination cards (like the CDC card) + ID without requiring the scannable pass sanitaire. And that’s true – many are. But this varies by place and by employee, and you run a real risk of being turned away from the thing you had hoped to do. If you absolutely can’t spare the time to do this extra step at the pharmacy, and if you’re comfortable with the risk of being turned away from many doorsteps, you can try to make your way through the city with your ID + vaccination papers. Someone will probably feed you. You’ll get into a few places.

But it’s probably a lot easier to take 30 minutes at the beginning of your trip and just get this annoying thing done. Remember: in the olden times people had to interrupt their travel fun to convert currency, cash travelers checks, buy phone cards and find internet cafés. This really isn’t so hard.

And on the bright side…

Once you jump through this simple hoop, you can relax and enjoy Paris’ incredible restaurants and cultural offerings knowing that you’re sharing space with vaccinated (or very recently tested) individuals. These careful measures, and France’s extremely high vaccination rate (nearly 80% of the French population have received 2 doses) make it one of the safer places for vaccinated travelers to enjoy themselves.

  1. Hi Meg,

    Thank you very much! The information is really clear, saving me 1h in conducting research! I also have a question to ask. Is pass sanitaire equivalent to EU covid pass? As I am traveling to Germany after France and I heard that some places (especially in Berlin) refuse to accept non-EU vaccine certification, getting an EU covid pass matter a lot.

    Thxxx!

    You’re welcome, and yes, you’ll be able to use a French health pass across Europe!

  2. Hi Meg,

    Thank you for your awesome explanation! Now that France is no longer requiring the health pass, can I still get one at CDG or another pharmacy in France? I am traveling to Germany and Norway after France and they both require an EU DCC or equivalent. It appears that my CDC card from the USA may be sufficient in Germany, but not in Norway. Thank you for your help!

    Hi Randy, I have no reason to think you wouldn’t be able to still convert your documents into a French health pass, even if it’s no longer required to show it.

  3. When the vaccine pass is suspended on March 14, 2022, does that mean it is not needed for a TGV trip within France? I can find various lists of where it is not longer needed but no mention of the TGV as with not needed or still needed.

    Hi Joanne, my understanding is that it is not required for the TGV.

  4. Hi Meg,
    Thank you for this clear and consise article. It is the best I have found in my research! My husband and I are both vaccinated with the Janssen vaccine. We were planning on getting the booster, but are now wondering if we should get 2 Pfizer vaccines instead. Our trip is April 25-May 4th, so we have enough time to receive both doses of an mRNA vaccine, but not enough time to get the additional booster. Have you heard any new information regarding this?
    Thanks!
    ——
    You’re very welcome, Maddi! Don’t hold me to this, but I suspect that the health pass will not be required by the time you are traveling in late April. But if that weren’t the case, my advice would be to make sure you have 3 shots total. – Meg

    UPDATE: As of March 14, 2022 France will no longer be requiring the health pass.

  5. I have been spending days reading and reading information on getting a vaccine equivalency pass and your blog basically summed it up within minutes! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! Hope you continue to update this blog as this is really very helpful!

  6. This is by far the clearest presentation of the procedure that I have found. Thank you so very much for writing it and keeping it up to date. It is shameful that the government websites are so confusing, even in French. I can confirm what you have written: ignore the sante.fr website showing only 3 participating pharmacies in Paris. Most Parisian pharmacies are able/willing to do this.

  7. Hi, Meg – thanks for sharing this information. I think the confusion around the 4-month period between the first two shots and the booster is just a language issue. For those of us who got our vaccinations several months before the booster was available, it sounds like we could be considered out of compliance with the 4-month requirement. But that 4-month period only applies to those who are recently vaccinated, and may not yet have the booster. Anyone who has two approved vaccinations, plus the booster, should be eligible for the Passe Sanitaire at this time. Correct?
    —-
    Correct! Very well put, Mark!

  8. Hi Meg, I am traveling from NY to Paris arriving March 8. I’m fully vaccinated and boosted within the equivalence requirements for the pass sanitaire for travelers coming from the US. I would like to get the pass sanitaire shortly after arrival. I’ve tried searching on the Sante.Fr website for locations near where I’m staying (near the Bastille) that can provide the attestation d’equivalence vaccinal but only come up with pharmacies, doctor’s offices, etc. that can administer the vaccine. Are there particular places one needs to go or can most pharmacies do this? Thanks very much for your help!

    Hi Kristine, I haven’t yet heard of a pharmacy who won’t do this (I’m sure they exist but are in the minority). There are thousands of pharmacies in Paris, you won’t have trouble finding one, I promise. Happy travels! – Meg

  9. Hi!

    When I click on the map now, for the pharmacies to convert our vaccination cards into a French Health pass, I only see 3 or 4 pharmacies in the entire Paris region. Have they reduced the number of pharmacies that are offering this service? Or am I missing something?

    We are family of 6 traveling in June 2022 from the US (but arriving from Cairo) with completed Moderna and Pfizer vaccines and boosters.

    —-
    There seems to be a problem with the pharmacy website right now, but rest assured that pharmacies are plentiful and they are still converting the health pass. By the time you travel in June, it’s likely that the pass sanitaire will not be required at all.

  10. Thank you so much for laying it all out there and explaining it so well. I’ve been doing some research about what is required. My wife has received 2 Pfizer vaccines, last one in April 2021. We know she needs a booster for our upcoming trip, but I came across this:
    “Since February 1st, 2022, in order to continue to be considered as fully vaccinated, persons aged eighteen or over wishing to enter the national territory must have received a booster dose no later than 9 months following the injection of the last required dose.”
    With this new requirement, does she need to start over or just get a booster? I wasn’t really able to find anything indicating what to do if it’s been more than 9 months from her second dose. Thank you!!!!

    Hi Jordan, the booster is required. It doesn’t matter how many months passed between the 2nd dose and the booster, as repeated in the other comments. Safe travels! – Meg

  11. The link on the sante.fr page now shows only 60 pharmacies, rather than the thousands before.
    I’m wondering if that’s a glitch because some of the pharmacies shown are in tiny places while big cities show none. Anyone know?
    —–

  12. Whew! Thank you for such a clear explanation. I’ve been searching the web for days to get this information before traveling to France in April. One concern, the page that lists the pharmacies now only shows 8 in Paris. Have the other 1100 or so stopped the vaccination pass service? Do you know a participating pharmacy near the Saint-Michelle/Notre Dame metro? or near l’ile Saint Michel?

    UPDATE: As of March 14, 2022 France will no longer be requiring the health pass.

  13. Do you know if it possible to find a pharmacy at CDG that will provide a health pass? We would like to take care of this task when we first arrive on Air France from the US as we are taking a train to Bayeux a few hours after our arrival. We shall have our vaccination cards with two Pfizer doses plus a booster. We arrive in Paris April 23rd. Many thanks for any advice you can give us.
    —-
    Hi Jeanie, we have heard that pharmacies at CDG are doing this but don’t yet have confirmation. We have also heard they might stop requiring the health pass before you travel. We’ll post more if that happens!

    UPDATE: As of March 14, 2022 France will no longer be requiring the health pass.

  14. Finally an easy to read post that clarifies so many questions. Any idea on how to find pharmacies offering competitive rates for the vaccine certificate conversion? Gets pricey for a family of 4.

    Hi Paulo, we don’t have any information on relative pricing sorry. But there’s talk that they may stop requiring the health pass soon. We’ll post more if that happens!

  15. Thank you for this awesome post/article! By far the most useful information I have seen anywhere on this subject. Clear, concise, and written in terms that we can actually understand. Merci! See you in April.

    UPDATE: As of March 14, 2022 France will no longer be requiring the health pass.

  16. Hello,
    My husband and I got our boosters in September 2021 before traveling to France that same month. We are thinking of returning.
    We both received the health pass, via email along with the code to download our QR codes to put into our phones. We have since gotten new phones, and the french pass did not transfer. We still have the emails with the codes sent on the original email, however the site has since changed and an error message appears saying as such.
    Is there a way to access our French Health Pass again? We would be traveling within the 9 month window before it expires
    —-
    How frustrating! I think this is a moot point since there is talk of no longer requiring the health pass if rates continue to fall.

  17. Wondering if there has been any update on travelling to Paris if you have the Janssen vaccine? My husbands has the J&J original vaccine + J&J booster and I have the J&J original vaccine and the Pfizer booster. Anyone had experiences with the passe sanitaire and the Janssen vaccines?

    Hi Heather, I don’t have new information, just the same answers in other comments about Janssen and the hope that this will soon be a moot point if they stop requiring the health pass in mid-march (if rates continue to fall) – Meg

  18. I’m arriving on a Sunday and all the pharmacies seemed to be closed on Sundays. What do I do?

    Hi Frank, there are fewer pharmacies open on Sunday but they are not all closed on Sundays. Google “Paris pharmacies open on Sunday” or use Google maps upon arrival to search for pharmacies near you and then click to see which ones are open.

  19. So we encountered the same problem with the Janssen vaccine. We went to Paris in December, and we are going back in mid-March

    We were able to do the online Tous Anti Covid QR codes for our first trip when the French online portal still allowed you to do it that way. My daughter and I both had two Pfizer doses, but my wife did the Janssen (she was part of a vaccine trial). We got our passes no problem, and they worked perfectly the whole time.

    Between applying for our codes (October) and our trip (December) we were all boosted–my daughter and I with a third Pfizer dose, my wife with a Moderna shot to boost her Janssen.

    While we were there in December we anticipated the new need for the app to be updated with a booster, so I went to a pharmacy to get the booster added to all of our passes. For mine and my daughters, it worked perfectly. It says Pfizer 3/3 in the app. Our two apps are still valid and ready to go.

    However, for my wife it didn’t work. Hers just says Moderna 2/2, and it was deactivated. This appears to be the common problem.

    The only solution that we see is for her to get an additional dose of Moderna tomorrow for our departure on March 11. She doesn’t care and is a teacher so no biggie. It’s tough because not everyone can get a de facto 4th shot, but that’s what we have decided to do.

    —-
    Hi Jay, this is unfortunately the annoying reality for those vaccinated with Janssen, but I think you’re handling it perfectly! Have a wonderful trip – Meg

  20. hi,

    I have some friends visiting from the US in mid March and everyone has their 3 doses aside from one friend. She tested positive for covid at the end of December before she was able to get her booster shot (she already has 2 doses of Moderna). She will be arriving in France 3 1/2 months after she tested positive so I am not sure she will qualify to get a booster before she comes over. I read somewhere that testing postive can count as your “3rd dose” so long as you bring proof that you had tested postive and another test showing you are now negative… does France allow this? Is there anything else she can do to receive the vaccine card once she’s here with only 2 doses and a positive covid case (now recovered)?
    Thanks so much!
    ——-
    Hi Mary, I’m sorry but I don’t know anything about submitting a positive test result in lieu of a booster. My gut tells me this will not work in France, but does anyone else reading this have any information to share? – Meg

    UPDATE: As of March 14, 2022 France will no longer be requiring the health pass.

  21. Great article! I am lucky enough to have the French certificate already for my first 2 vaccines, but no way to add the booster (all from California). My last trip was through CDG to Pau. I would certainly like to hear from anyone who got help from a CDG pharmacy. Last time I don’t see how I would have been able to board the regional carrier without the Tous Anti Covid app pass which 4 months ago was current. I usually only have 3-4 hours at CDG.
    —-
    Anyone have an experience at CDG airport that they can share?

  22. Hello, do you know how the new rules requiring an mRNA booster affects the health/vaccine pass for those who have received the Janssen vaccine and booster? I will be in Paris in March (3/11-3/14). I have had 2 Janssen shots- one in April 2021 and a booster dose 11/16/21. My niece will be with me and had her Janssen shots in June 2021 and a booster on 1/11/22. We would both be under the 4 months required for a booster; however I’m worried they won’t recognize the Janssen booster since the rules require an mRNA booster as of Feb. 1. Thanks for any information you might have on this topic!

    Hi Cheryl – I’m sorry to report that the situation is kind of a mess for those who have Janssen. I’ve addressed this in the original post and in the comments and don’t have any additional information at this time. Does anyone else reading this have an experience of getting the pass sanitaire to recognize 2 Janssen shots as fully boosted (or a negative experience of them not recognizing the second shot as fully boosted)? – Meg

  23. Hello! I got my J&J dose in April 9th, 2021, then I got my booster shot of Pfizer in December 21, 2021. That is just over 8 months apart. First J&J then Pfizer, a mix and match. I will be traveling to Paris March 6th. Am I still eligible to just show up at a pharmacy in Paris and get my health pass from the app? Or is there something else I need to do since I heard talk about the 7 months. Please let me know, thank you!

    Hi Simon – I’m sorry to report that the situation is kind of a mess for those who have Janssen. I’ve addressed this in the original post and in the comments and don’t have any additional information at this time. My guess is that your 1 Janssen shot + 1 Pfizer shot will be interpreted as 2/3 shots (unboosted). Does anyone else reading this have an experience to share? -Meg

  24. Hello, me and my family are going to Paris in the end of March. We already got two AstraZeneca shots and a Pfizer booster. But my brother received one Janssen shot and also a Janssen booster last December. We can’t get another booster with a mRNA vaccine for him here in Brazil. Do you think there’s any possibility he would be considered fully vaccinated with two Janssen shots for the Passe Vaccinal in France?

  25. I have a question because I’m confused.

    I am supposed to be traveling to France from NY on 2/14/22 but I arrive on 2/15/22.

    I have received my 2nd Pfizer dose on 9/13/21. I have not gotten boosted.

    If I get my booster on 2/11/22, before leaving to France, will this be an issue since I did not get booster within the four months of getting my second dose?

    This is confusing!

    —–
    Hi KP, we know it’s confusing but you should be fine. Having your booster is what matters. You don’t need to have it “within” four months. You just need to have it. We’ve addressed this in many, many, many of the other comments because other people find it confusing, too. Safe and happy travels – Meg

  26. Hello, thanks for this information. It is so much more concise than reading all the official sites. Do you know if the health pass can be used in Amsterdam? We are visiting Paris at the end of March 2022 and then going to Amsterdam. We are originally from the USA and will have had our booster shots before arriving in Paris.
    —–
    You’re welcome! The French health pass can be used in all other EU countries (and vice versa). Happy travels!
    ——
    UPDATE: As of March 14, 2022 France will no longer be requiring the health pass.

  27. Thank you Meg for clarify, I found more info in your article than in the officials websites.
    I was double vaccinated with Pfizer in July last year.
    I booked my travel to France mid March, I was about to go getting my booster shot last week and… I got sick with Covid the day before the shot.
    Everyone including my doctor highly recommend for me to wait at least 3 months before taking the booster shot.
    Would I be able to get my vaccine certificate with my primary series plus a recent recovery certificate?
    Thank you!
    —-
    Hi Valentina, I’m sorry but I don’t know anything about submitting a positive test result in lieu of a booster. My gut tells me this will not work in France, but does anyone else reading this have any information to share? I’m hope you’re feeling well after being sick last week – Meg

  28. Hello im planning to travel to Paris in a couple weeks and im not eligible yet to get my booster shot (I live in new york) will they still give me my vaccine pass even though im literally ineligible to get my booster shot?
    —-
    Hi Meagan (great name!), I’m sorry to say that it doesn’t matter if you aren’t eligible or don’t have access to boosters, it matters if you have it. Are you sure you’re not eligible in New York? – Meg

  29. Good morning. I’m hoping you know the answer to this as I am seeing conflicting info on various websites and a bit unclear on the France government site. My daughter is hoping to travel from Canada to France and Spain with me June 2022. She will have had her booster well before that time. However – there was almost a year between her second shot and her booster. Does that make it so that she can’t get the health pass?
    —–
    Hi Lannea, our understanding is that it matters that she has the booster, and doesn’t matter how many months passed before the booster. – Meg

  30. Hi, I got my J&J shot November 22, in the US. Im planning on being in France from march 8-12. I’m a little confused on the booster rules. Do I need a booster no matter what because it is a single dose vaccine. I technically do not need the booster otherwise until the end of march, correct? Thank you so much for breaking this down, this was so much easier to read!

    Hi Lexi, I’m sorry to report that the situation is kind of a mess for those who have Janssen. – Meg

  31. Hello! Thanks for your information! Im traveling next week and I’d like to know if is there any delay between asking for the health pass in the pharmacy and receiving it. Im very scared and I dont want to lose all the tickets I’ve bought!
    ———-
    Hi Alex, you should receive it on the spot, no waiting. Bon voyage! – Meg

  32. Hello! I have been vaccinated abroad with one dose of Janssen in November and a second booster dose on 24/01/22. Will my pass work starting 31/01?

    Thank you!

    ——
    Hi Ina, I’ve answered the question about Janssen in many other comments that you can scroll through. Happy travels – Meg

  33. Hi!
    I am planning a trip to Paris in the beginning of March and am getting information on how to get the health pass. I had 2 Pfizer dozes in 2021 and my Moderna booster Jan 2022, so I think I am fine to get the pass when I need it. My concern is my friend that will be newly vaccinated using moderna (over 14 days after 2nd dose) in the beginning of March. Do we need to reschedule so she can get a booster for the new booster requiremnet to get the health pass?

    Thank you!
    ——-
    Hi Hannah, you need to receive a booster shot *4 months* after your second dose. If she received her second dose in the beginning of March, and you are traveling in March, it should be fine. – Meg

  34. I’ve read the booster is only good for 7 months before entry into France. I’m bit a bit confused about the 7 months expiry of the booster.
    I’m entering France on the 1st August 2022 for a 4 week trip. I’ve had my booster on 14th January so I get in by a few weeks. Am i at risk of the ‘pass sanitaire’ expiring whilst I’m in France.
    Also my brother who had his booster on the 14th Dec 2021 misses out. Will he require a 2nd booster shot before then.
    I’m hoping that the 7 months is only relevant for current entry into France and that by July a clearer picture will emerge.
    —–
    Hi George – the requirement for a booster is now four months after the second dose. To my knowledge, they are not currently requiring anything more than a 3rd dose (booster). Since you have that third shot / booster, you should be fine. – Meg

  35. Hello,
    In anticipation of our March 2022 trip, my wife and I received our French health passes in early November, and got our boosters in December. I tried to send my booster information through my health pass account, but that doesn’t seem possible and they haven’t responded to my questions. Does this mean the certificate we received will not be valid an we’ll need to go to a pharmacy when we arrive?
    —-
    Hi Tom, I’m not sure if you got your booster in France or the US but if you’re not receiving replies by email (or however you’re trying to contact “them”), I’d plan on visiting a pharmacy when you arrive. I had to go in person and pay the fee to add my booster to an existing pass sanitiare. It is what it is. – Meg

  36. Hello! My wife and I have our Health Pass/Green Pass, which worked great in France and Italy. We had our Pfizer booster last month, which is required to return to France. Can our original Green Pass be updated with the booster or do we need to apply again when we arrive? Thank you!
    ——
    Hi Jenny, I got a pass sanitaire this summer but had to go in person to a pharmacy and pay the fee to add my booster. I don’t know of any way to “add it” without visiting a pharmacy and doing the process described in this post – Meg

  37. Hi-

    I will be traveling to Paris beginning of March. I will let you know if I am able to convert the my vaccine card to the health pass within the airport pharmacy.

    —-
    Wonderful, thank you!

  38. Hi! I got my moderna booster end of october and will be travelling to France mid May so that would put me at almost 7 months from my booster. Will France require a 4th dose in my case?

    Hi MB, the requirement for a booster is now four months after the second dose. To my knowledge, they are not currently requiring anything more than a 3rd dose (booster). Since you have that third shot / booster, you should be fine. – Meg

  39. This is so helpful – thank you! I am traveling to Paris in May and have been boosted. We have a Government of Canada Digital Vaccine Passport with a QR code that shows all 3 shots and their dates. Do I still need to convert this scannable digital vaccine passport into the French one at a pharmacy? Thanks so much!

    Hi Naomi – To my knowledge, all vaccine information from outside the EU, whether paper or digital, needs to be converted using the process described in this post. – Meg

  40. How do they handle the case of someone who had their first shot dec 2020 second shot jan 2021 and booster in sept 2021? I got my shots before the general public because I’m a healthcare worker and got my booster as soon as I was eligible. But more than 7 months elapsed between my second mRNA shot and my 3rd. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks for writing this article.

  41. I’m confused about the booster requirements. I received my Pfizer booster in late September, 2021, less than 7 months after my 2nd shot. My husband received his booster in early November, 8 months after his 2nd shot. We are both over 65 and will be in France from March 22-May 1. Do we meet the requirements and if so will our pass be valid throughout our stay? Thank you.

  42. Hi! Will France’s pass also be accepted in Portugal – Portugal only accepts EU digital pass currently and we (fully vaccinated and boosted American with paper CDC card) want to do a combined trip.

    Hi Julia, my understanding is that France’s pass sanitaire is interchangeable with the EU digital pass. – Meg

  43. I had my first two Moderna vaccines in the US, and my booster in France (Pfizer) in October.
    The first two vaccines are registered in the tousanticovid app with a QR code. When I got the booster, the Mairie told me that they did not know how to add the third vaccine to the app so it shows 3/3, and thought that I would have to redo the whole thing. At the time this did not matter as three vaccines were not required. I am returning to France next week. Do you think the Pharmacy will be able to take my US vaccine card, the paper attestation of the booster, and load all into the app? Many Thanks
    —-
    Hi Stefan, yes I think they will be able to do this without any problem. The requirement for a booster is now four months after the second dose. To my knowledge, they are not currently requiring anything more than a 3rd dose (booster). Since you have that third shot / booster, you should be fine. Would you let us know how it goes? – Meg

  44. Hi and good morning.

    I am hopeful that you can address my situation. My wife, son and I are traveling to Paris mid May through early June, 2022. We are from the US. We have all had the Pfizer vaccine: 1st dose, 2nd dose and Booster. I am over 65; all others are under 65.

    Facts: I am over 65 and had my 1st dose of Pfizer on January 26, 2021; my 2nd dose of Pfizer on February 17, 2021; and my Booster dose of Pfizer on December 15, 2021. I consider myself fully vaccinated.

    Question: My question pertains to the reference of “7 months” in the French Health Pass literature. It is confusing. It was 10 months between my 2nd Pfizer dose (2/17/21) and my Pfizer Booster dose (12/15/21). Since I have had my Booster Pfizer dose, does the 7 month period affect my getting a French Health Pass?

    —-

To my knowledge, they are not currently requiring anything more than a 3rd dose (booster). Since you have that third shot / booster, you should be fine. Would you let us know how it goes? – Meg

  45. Hi! I have just downloaded the app but have a question My husband and I will be going to France late April through early May We have only one phone Will the app hold two Passé Sanitaires when we go to a pharmacy to receive it Thank you!
    —-
    Hi Jeffery, I don’t think the phone can hold multiple passes, no. But you can carry a printed paper pass sanitaire (the pharmacy gives a paper one initially that you can scan to upload into the phone app if you don’t want to carry it around. For the second person without a phone, just carry the paper. – Meg

  46. Hello, I received my dose of J&J on 3/23/21 and then a Pfizer booster on 11/28/21, which is technically 8 months after the J&J dose. Will this be an issue in terms of receiving the newly updated Passe Vaccinal? I’ve read confusing explanations online. Thank you so much for your assistance!

    Hi Hudson, The requirement for a booster is now four months after the second dose. To my knowledge, they are not currently requiring anything more than a 3rd dose (booster). Since you have that third shot / booster, you should be fine. Would you let us know how it goes? – Meg

  47. Hello. I am à franco-American living in Brittany… My American brother and sister-in-law are arriving February 6 into Roissy cdg airport from the us. They booked a train to Rennes which leaves from the airport a few hours after arrival. This was all booked before the vaccine passport was voted. Now that it’s coming into effect tomorrow, I can’t find any information regarding pharmacies within the airport that would convert their vaccine cards (they are boosted) into the new vaccine pass… im worried they will lose a day and have to cancel their train, go to a pharmacy downtown Paris the next morning (a monday) and book a new train from Montparnasse… it seems so complicated, especially since they don’t know the country, only speak a little French, etc. I wish (and hope!) the airport would be able to provide that service so they can take their original train and get to me the day they arrive. If anyone has any useful information or advice I would be so grateful… many thanks.

  48. Thank you so much for your helpful post. My husband and I received our pass sanitare QR codes when we were in France back in September 2021 (we loved our Paris by Mouth tour of the Marais while we were there!) We are returning to France in April 2022, but our EU Covid Certifications expired on Jan 14, 2022. Ideally we’d like to have all the paperwork taken care of before we arrive so I was wondering if you have heard of a way to submit proof of our booster shots to be added to our existing certificates. Thanks!

  49. I am traveling to Paris from Los Angeles, arriving April 13 and 4 days later heading to London, Gibraltar, Malaga, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Nuremberg and Luxembourg before returning to Paris. Then returning home via New York City May 6.

    I am triple vaccinated with Pfizer, last shot October 12. I assume the 7 months requirement after my 2nd shot last February is overridden by my Booster in October. Right?

    My questions: Will I still have to have a negative rapid test 24 hours before leaving the States for Paris, and will my Health Pass be accepted in all the cities indicated, including London and Gibraltar, which are no longer part of the EU?

    And with the pass will I not be subject to Covid tests now mandated, for example, on the 2nd day of my London arrival or arrival at Gibraltar Airport? Many thanks.

    —-
    Hi Michael, it sounds like a wonderful trip. For the moment, being boosted is the only requirement and it doesn’t matter how much time has elapsed since they are not requiring anything beyond one booster. Your question about the 24 hour rapid test to get into the States is a rule made by the US and there’s no way to predict what their requirements will be in April. We don’t have any information for locations outside of Paris. – Bon voyage! Meg

  50. Hi – great info!

    Question – do we need the Pass Sanitaire to check into our hotel and drop off luggage? I just want to make sure we can do this before heading to a pharmacy to get our CDC vaccination card converted.

    Thank you!

    No, your hotel will not require this, nor will local transport (taxi or subway) from the airport to the hotel.

  51. Thank you so much for providing all of this helpful information! I was able to get my health pass sanitare in CDG airport terminal 2F which was super convenient. Locating the pharmacy took some time- but that was because I was going in the wrong direction. Once located; the process took about 5 minutes. They took my passport and vaccination card and provided me with an EU certificate physical card as well as a print out. It was 40 euros. I only stayed in Paris for a day- and then went on to Norway. They verified my documents prior to my flight to Tromso- and there were no issues. Overall I would recommend getting it done in airport if you have opportunity.

    Thank you for sharing, Lecia!

  52. I’m planning on travel from the USA. Once the health pass is obtained it will need to be reissued every 72 hours, correct? I am fully vaccinated with a booster. Will I need to take a rapid test at the pharmacy before it’s initially issued? And then again in 72 hours before reissue? Confused on if a rapid test will need to be given before QR can be obtained.
    Thank you

    Hi Yvette, you do not need to reissue the health pass every 72 hours, no. It’s good for many months. And you do not need a rapid test to get it. It’s based on your vaccine status, not a test.

  53. Hi my second shot was taken july 4th 2021 and I have not received a booster yet i will be in paris from january 20th 2022 to the 25th i believe I should be ok to get a pass sanitaire before the 7 month booster requirement elapses? Thanks

    ______

    Hi Michael, your pass sanitaire is only invalid (or you’re not eligible) if it has been more than 7 months since the date of your last shot. -Meg

  54. Hello and thank you so much for those explanations of what and where to have the “health pass”. I know what it mean to be reject at a restaurant and museum because of not having the QR code. This time I need to be prepare.
    I want to know if the pass is valid indefinitely and good to travel to Europe and Switzerland?
    By any chance is there a way to do the health pass procedure on line?
    =====

    Hi Catherine, there’s no way at this time to convert your health pass online. The pass isn’t good indefinitely because they continue to add requirements as time goes on, like adding the requirement for a booster by January 15. We assume that this will continue over time as new public health recommendations come into place. My understanding is that the pass sanitaire works in all other countries of Europe. -Meg

  55. Thank you so much for writing this. This clears up so much. I’m visiting the beginning of March…could be a whole different world but then but wanted to clarify something. So you are able to fly and land in France fully vaccinated and then once you have arrived and checked in THEN you need to go get this pass? It doesn’t need to be done prior to arrival?

    Thank you so much in advance and cheers!

    ——

    –That’s correct, Ryan! You need the pass sanitaire when trying to enter restaurants, museums, and long-distance trains. You don’t need it to enter the country, take a taxi, or take the subway. So you can arrive and get settled and then head out to a pharmacy to do the conversion on the first day or before you want to visit places that required the pass – Meg

  56. I’m wondering if anyone else has run into a peculiar issue with getting their pass sanitaire after getting a Janssen booster shot. I had my booster in November and while the pass reflects that I now have shots 2/2, according to EU guidance it should show 2/1 as the convention. Because of this difference my pass is about to expire (after 2months) despite my having gotten a booster shot. No on one in the French pharmacies I’ve gone to know what to do about it. The problem is that very shortly I my pass will expire even though it shouldn’t based on the rules laid out by France and the EU. Any thoughts would be hugely appreciated.

    =====
    -Hi Tarek, I witnessed this first hand when a friend who had Janssen (and a booster) visited last week. I took him to the pharmacy to do the conversion and there was no problem initially uploading his new QR code pass into the app. It worked the first time we showed it at a restaurant, and then not the next time. We deleted the uploaded pass and re-uploaded from the same paper QR code and once again it worked the first time and then not again. When it didn’t work it would say “not valid!” and we’d get a tsk-tsk from the employee and would have to explain that Janssen only has one shot, and the second shot is a booster, and “here look at these dates.” It was a pain and clearly frustrating for the employees because it so obviously says “not valid” but actually is. After a few days of this I told my friend to skip the pass sanitaire because the blinking “not valid!” message was worse than just showing the vaccination card. He showed his paper vaccination card in five places (with ID) and explained with words that Janssen is only one shot and the most recent booster was in December and so all was fine. It worked every time but was annoying. In short, the pass sanitiare is not at all set up to deal with Janssen. That was the best work around that we were able to find. Hope that helps! – Meg

  57. Hello,
    Thank you! I will arrive at CDG and three hours later take a TGV to Rennes. Do I need a passe sanitaire to board the TGV and, if so, where can I get one since I am not going into Paris?
    I really appreciate anyone’s help.

    ====
    Hi Jane, I just took a TGV from Paris to Rennes and they did not check my pass sanitaire to board. But on the return trip from Rennes to Paris they definitely checked. I have not yet heard about options for converting the pass at the airport (which is disappointing), since this is currently all pharmacy based. From my perspective, your options are to change your train ticket to depart from Paris instead of CDG and to go straight to Paris and find a pharmacy and then leave from Paris-Montparnasse…. -or- to take your chances trying board the TGV from the airport, armed with your vaccination card, your passport, and a giant smile. Either they won’t check or they’ll understand that you haven’t converted yet, or they’ll deny you and you’ll have to come to Paris, convert your pass, and book another train from Montparnasse. That’s just my personal advice and I’m sorry there’s not a more obvious solution. – Meg

  58. Thanks for the helpful info! Will the trains/buses from CDG airport into Paris allow us to board without the health pass? Our destination is Paris but we need to get there first before converting. Thank you.

    ====

    Hi Victoria, yes you can take a subway/RER or taxi into the city without needing the pass sanitaire. You’ll need it to enter restaurants, museums or long-distance trains, but not for local transport. – Meg

  60. I am an American who has been traveling for several months. I am currently in Spain and want to enter France, but I am concerned about the booster requirement that starts there Jan 15. In addition to my CDC card that shows proof of my double Pfizer vaccination in April, I received a booster shot in Scotland last month. But they won’t document it because I am not a citizen. I’m not opposed to getting another booster if that is the only way to travel in France. If I enter France before Jan 15, can I get a booster somewhere there, and then take that proof to a pharmacy for a pass sanitaire? If so, where can a US citizen get a verifiable booster in France? Any other advice?
    Thank you very much!

    ====

    Hi Mike, I’m not 100% sure, but I think you can follow the same procedure we discuss in this article to convert your vaccinations into a pass sanitaire, regardless of whether that booster was done in the US or Scotland – Meg

  61. Thank you for the helpful info. I am traveling to France on January 4th and staying until Jan. 15. If I am fully vaccinated with 2 doses of Pfizer and the booster shot, will I be able to acquire a pass sanitaire that will be valid through the duration of my stay, or will I need to renew it every 24 hours with a negative test?
    ====

    Hi Henry, yes you should be able to get a pass sanitaire – no need to take tests every day! – Meg

  62. Hi my wife and I are traveling to France in March. She will be getting her booster in next week or so but last dose prior to booster shot was about 10 months ago. If she gets her booster will she be okay with getting the health pass when she arrives. I was confused when it is saying no more then 7 months in between second dose and booster. Thank you

    ====

    Hi Justin, I believe that the date of the booster is what will be important here. The “seven months since the second shot” is basically incentivizing people to get a booster if they have not already done so. But she’s getting hers, so it should be fine – Meg

  63. Hi, we are travelling from canada (quebec) and have received the second of two pfizer doses in late june 2021. Although the government has opened up boosters for all ages, the health ministry of the province has not yet for anyone under 65y/o so currently we cannot get a booster shot.
    What is the time after the Jan 15 regulations) for the biggest gap allowed to get a Pass sanitare between second dose and booster, ( I believe currently it is max 7 months)

    ====

    Hi Lourdes, you’re right that France is still insisting (for the pass sanitaire, not to enter the country) on no more than 7 months from the last vaccine (2/2 for Pfizer/Moderna or 1/1 for Janssen) regardless of what country you’re in or if vaccine boosters are available to you there. They really don’t want un-boosted people in enclosed spaces like restaurants, museums and long-distance trains. Perhaps you can wait to travel until you’re boosted? -Meg

  64. Hello, we are traveling and arriving 12/25 to Paris from USA. We all received our health pass, except I just noticed one expired 12/14/21, because 1 person traveling received J&J. He has since received booster, however, we need to convert his CDC to an updated health pass. Can you advise if any pharmacies are open on christmas day? we have tickets for opera on this date. Thankyou,

  65. ALEXANDER Rufino OSBORNE

    Hi,

    As with the others, Thanks so much for this helpful site!

    I am traveling to France January 22nd and have tickets to the opera January 23rd. I have the two doses of the moderna vaccine in the USA the second of which was given 9-30-21. And I have two doses of the Sinovac vaccine issued in the Dominican Republic before that.

    According to the CDC I need to wait 6 months to get a booster shot from the moderna vaccine. Therefore I am not supposed to get a booster shot until March 30th 2022.

    According to the french rules after January 15th 2022 they will require proof of a booster shot as well as a vaccine. I would hate to miss the performance because of a problem with my pass sanitaire. Will they give me one without the booster shot? Is there any delay when I go to the pharmacy to get the QR code? As I’m arriving on the 22nd and attending a performance on the 23rd at 2:30PM I am worried that I’ll have enough time to get the pass from a pharmacy.

    Thanks very much,

    Alex Osborne

    ====

    Alex, the CDC is not advising people to wait six months anymore. Get the booster before you travel.-Meg

  66. Thank you so much for this helpful information! We were in France in the summer and were able to use our digital California pass, but it was at the discretion of the employee checking the passes. I was nervous each time! I’m flying into Lyon in 5 days and will find a pharmacie first thing so that I can use tous anti Covid during this trip.

  67. my family and i are all fully vaccinated Pfizer and moderna with boosters. we are traveling to Paris between 12/29 – 1/6 from the United States . Can i convert my U.S. CDC vaccination cards or will i need to be tested every 3 days to get our French Health Pass?

    ====

    Yes, you can convert your US vaccination card using the process described here, which is advisable because a negative test now counts for only 24 hours in France. – Meg

  68. Hi, If I lost the vaccine card but have a scannable QR code on my phone and pictures will that count?

    ====

    Maybe? Maybe not. I’d strongly urge you to get a replacement paper vaccine card in the US before traveling-Meg

  69. Can you do this in French territories outside of France. Like France Polynesia?

    ====

    I’m sorry but we are only tracking information for travelers to Paris. – Meg

  70. If we lost our physical American CDC vaccine card, will they accept the digital California certificate instead?

  71. We will be flying to Paris on our way to an African Safari. We plan to be overnight in February on the way to and 5 nights coming back, before returning to the US. I was hoping that there is a way to apply for the pass sanitaire prior to leaving the US.

    ====

    For the moment, you have to do this in person. It’s easy to do upon arrival. – Meg

  72. Hi! thanks for the info, I only have my digital proof of vaccination for california, not the physical one, will that work to enter the country and getting my health pass?

    ====

    Maybe? Maybe not. I’d strongly urge you to get a replacement paper vaccine card in the US before traveling -Meg

  73. Hi, thanks for the useful info! Would you happen to know how long it takes to get the health pass at the pharmacy? do you get the qr code immediately?

    ====

    There’s really no way for us to predict this. You could estimate the process itself will take 10 minutes, but it depends on whether you go at a busy time and if there are other customers waiting. – Meg

  74. Thank you so much for this article. We are planning to visit Nice during Christmas, and this really helped us with planning. But can anybody still see pharmacy list anymore? I tried to load that website multiple times, but no luck. Is there any pharmacy in Nice that does this green pass?

    ====

    We can see the map when we look at it today. Perhaps the website was momentarily glitchy? I’m sorry but we have no information about Nice. – Meg

  75. Hi Ilene, at this time, there is no way to update anything remotely. You would need to go to a pharmacy to update your pass with your booster shot upon arrival. But chances are good that this process will change 5 times between now and June, so I recommend checking back or doing further research in May.

  76. Hi Thank you for making it very helpful with all the infos !! What about if childrens between 5-11 has first dose & second vaccine is scheduled 10 days prior to the trip will they get granted for the pass sanitaire? Or the time frame will be to short between both doze?
    Thank you kindly
    ——
    Hi Sabrina, our understanding is that the pass sanitaire is required for children ages 12-17. If yours are ages 5-11, they will not be required to show a pass sanitaire.-Meg

  77. Hi, BIG thanks for the useful information. Just a tiny question, usually how long does it take at the pharmacy to convert your vaccination certificate to “Pass Sanitaire”?
    —–
    Hi AJ, there’s really no way for us to predict this. You could estimate the process itself will take 10 minutes, but it depends on whether you go at a busy time and if there are other customers. – Meg

  78. I have been stressed about coming to France worrying if we had everything we need when we get there. This has set my mind at ease seeing all the answers to these questions. Thank you for doing this.

  79. Help please! I have the French Pass Sanitaire (OR code) obtained online and used while in France in October. No problems. I got my booster after my return. I am over 65 years old. Can I get the pass updated to show the booster prior to my return to France in June?

  80. Hello! Very helpful info. What about if i have 2 dozes of Sinopharm? Can i get a boostee doze in France as a tourist to get the green pass? Thanks
    ——–
    Hi Mateo, our understanding is that Sinopharm is not accepted as a vaccine in France. “Only vaccines authorised by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) will be accepted, i.e. Pfizer (Comirnaty), Moderna, AstraZeneca (Vaxzevria) and Johnson & Johnson (Janssen),” the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs points out.”

  81. Hi May Louie, we just learned that the booster requirement which goes into effect on December 15 for those over 65 is progressive and based on the date of your 2nd shot. You should be fine to get a pass sanitaire because your 2nd shot was less than 7 months ago. These rules may change, but you’re only at risk of being denied a pass sanitaire at the point when seven months have passed after your 2nd shot (which, in your case, would be March). The Local has a good article on this here: https://www.thelocal.fr/20211213/how-the-rules-of-the-french-health-pass-change-on-wednesday/

  82. Hi Miggie, I’m in the same situation myself and will be asking this week. I’m guessing that I *will* have to pay a fee in order to get a scannable certificate to add my booster shot to the TousAntiCovid app. The pharmacy still has to take time to process the request so it makes sense they would charge. But also remember, if you are under 65 years old, the rule requiring a booster (7 months after the second shot) do not go into effect until January 15. So, depending on when you are traveling, you may not need anything more than your existing pass sanitaire.

  83. Hi, thank you for such clear and useful info. I might have the same situation of May Loiuse, as I have got my Jensen 1st jab on 29th Nov in USA and not able to get the second shot as 4 weeks would not have passed yet when I should arrive in France. Any recommendation? Shall I go just to the pharmacy and beg for the conversion…what about if they refuse to do so?

  84. What happens if you already had your vaccine card converted to an EU Health Pass? Do you have to pay for an updated pass after showing your booster at the pharmacy?

  85. Our understanding is that once you convert and get this digital scannable pass sanitaire that it will work anywhere in the EU.

  86. That must be very frustrating, May. You’re right that travelers aged 65 and over need to have the booster in order to qualify for a pass sanitaire. I’d recommend trying to convert it at a pharmacy anyway, and if that doesn’t work, you can take your Canadian vaccine papers around with you (plus ID) and hope that people let you in. This is a tough situation. If you learn more, would you report back and let us know?

    More information on the requirement for 65 years and older: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-59229041

  87. There is no expiration date to the pass sanitaire. However, requirements may change over time (for example a booster shot is required by January 15), so additional steps may be required over time. But you definitely don’t need to renew it every three days!

  88. Thank you so much for clarifying this for us. I thought it would be very difficult to obtain the pass so I was about to just cancel my trip. Your article surely took that load off my shoulders. 🙂

    What happens if I lost my vaccine card? I just have a picture of it, is this valid to get the pass sanitaire?

    —–

    I’m sorry you lost your vaccine card, but no, I don’t think a picture of it will get you the pass sanitaire. You might want to replace your vaccine card before traveling. – Meg

  90. Hello,
    As of Dec 15, 2021, individuals 65 yrs & older require a booster to obtain the Health Pass. I am not eligible to obtain the booster(3rd shot) in Ontario since my 2nd dose was Aug 24th(less than 6 months). I will land in Paris on Dec 16, 2021. Do you know if I’ll be able obtain the Health pass in Paris? The sites I’ve visited are not clear about this. Appreciate any information you can provide. Thank you.

  91. Hi! Do you happen to know how long a “pass sanitaire” is valid for?
    Does it need to be renewed every 3 days?

  92. Hi,

    Thank you for sharing this very helpful information. Could you explain how the “attestation d’équivalence vaccinale” relates to the EU Digital Covid Certificate? My family will be traveling from France to Spain, and I am trying to confirm what additional documents we might need.
