What’s a pass sanitaire?
In August 2021, France implemented rules requiring a pass sanitaire or health pass for entry into museums, bars, restaurants, trains and other public spaces. You can qualify for a health pass by being fully vaccinated. For now this means having received 2 shots and a booster shot, in most cases.
The latest rules
The rule in effect since February 15 is that the booster shot is required if it has been four months since your completed your vaccine (your second shot, for two-dose vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna).
If you have had your booster, it doesn’t seem to matter if that booster was two weeks ago or eight months ago. The point is that you’ve been boosted (their rules are designed to encourage the booster). For the moment, France is not requiring anything more than one booster, no matter how much time has lapsed since your booster. So if you’re traveling in August 2022 and worried that too much time will have passed since your booster, sit tight. The rules will likely change by then and we’ll update this post when they do.
There are some options for non-vaccinated individuals but we’re not going to discuss them.
How do locals get it?
For vaccinated locals, obtaining a health pass is simple: vaccines administered in France are accompanied by a QR code that can be easily scanned by your phone into a free app called TousAntiCovid (united against Covid). Once you have scanned your vaccine documents into the app (available in English), your phone can then be scanned by anyone checking health passes at an entry point. This isn’t so different from waiters checking paper vaccination cards in New York or other cities that require these – it’s just higher tech.
*You can also obtain a health pass with a negative COVID test administered in France, but this is only valid for 24 hours. It’s more annoying to get retested every day than to convert your vaccine card.
But what if you’re traveling?
You don’t have to be French or to have been vaccinated in French to get a pass sanitaire, but it does require an extra step upon arrival. If you have a paper vaccine card without a QR code (like those issued in the United States & Canada), you’ll need to show your documents and convert them into “vaccine equivalency health pass” that is scannable.
*This is true even if you come from a state (New York, California and others) that has its own scannable QR code. It won’t be readable by the French scanners and you’ll still have to go through this process.
Throughout the fall of 2021, there was a great deal of confusion about how to do this. There’s a much clearer system in place now that this conversion is being done by local pharmacies. Here’s what to expect:
Find a pharmacy to convert your documents into a French health pass. Visit this page (in English) from the Ministry of Health and scroll down to find the map of pharmacies who will convert foreign vaccination cards into a health pass. Zoom in to Paris (it’s the big circle in the top-center of the country showing more than 1000 pharmacies) and zoom into an area that’s convenient for you. Note the address and hours of the nearest pharmacy, and grab a few back up options, too.
Bring your paper vaccination documents showing that you are fully vaccinated, which in France means that at least 14 days have passed since the second shot for two-shot vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca) or at least four weeks have passed after the shot for one-shot vaccines (Johnson & Johnson).
Bring your passport. A driver’s license might be accepted as ID, but they’ll feel much better if you show your passport.
Go up to the register and ask for “une attestation d’équivalence vaccinale” or just say “bonjour” (hello!) with a big smile and hold up your passport and vaccine card and say “s’il vous plaît?” (please).
Bring money (cash or card) because most pharmacies are charging a fee for this conversion. The fee varies from place to place but cannot exceed 36€.
Download the TousAntiCovid app and scan the paper you receive at the pharmacy into the app. Once you get the thumbs up (see below) you can show your phone and your ID for entry at restaurants, bars, museums and other spaces that require the pass. If you don’t feel like using the app, you can carry around the paper copy from the pharmacy with the QR code, along with your ID.
About Janssen: This process is not working seamlessly for those with single dose vaccines like Janssen. The QR code/app seems to be set up to read the single dose of Janssen plus a booster as 2/2 shots, with a booster still required. Scroll down to the comments for more discussion about this.
If you already have a pass sanitaire from a previous trip (lucky you!) and need to add your booster shot to the existing pass, you’ll have to go to a pharmacy and pay a fee to do it.
But is this really necessary?
It may feel like a drag to find a pharmacy and to set aside half an hour to get this done at the beginning of your trip. You may have heard that lots of places are accepting paper vaccination cards (like the CDC card) + ID without requiring the scannable pass sanitaire. And that’s true – many are. But this varies by place and by employee, and you run a real risk of being turned away from the thing you had hoped to do. If you absolutely can’t spare the time to do this extra step at the pharmacy, and if you’re comfortable with the risk of being turned away from many doorsteps, you can try to make your way through the city with your ID + vaccination papers. Someone will probably feed you. You’ll get into a few places.
But it’s probably a lot easier to take 30 minutes at the beginning of your trip and just get this annoying thing done. Remember: in the olden times people had to interrupt their travel fun to convert currency, cash travelers checks, buy phone cards and find internet cafés. This really isn’t so hard.
And on the bright side…
Once you jump through this simple hoop, you can relax and enjoy Paris’ incredible restaurants and cultural offerings knowing that you’re sharing space with vaccinated (or very recently tested) individuals. These careful measures, and France’s extremely high vaccination rate (nearly 80% of the French population have received 2 doses) make it one of the safer places for vaccinated travelers to enjoy themselves.

When the vaccine pass is suspended on March 14, 2022, does that mean it is not needed for a TGV trip within France? I can find various lists of where it is not longer needed but no mention of the TGV as with not needed or still needed.

We were planning on getting the booster, but are now wondering if we should get 2 Pfizer vaccines instead. Our trip is April 25-May 4th, so we have enough time to receive both doses of an mRNA vaccine, but not enough time to get the additional booster. Have you heard any new information regarding this?

This is by far the clearest presentation of the procedure that I have found. Thank you so very much for writing it and keeping it up to date. It is shameful that the government websites are so confusing, even in French. I can confirm what you have written: ignore the sante.fr website showing only 3 participating pharmacies in Paris. Most Parisian pharmacies are able/willing to do this.
Hi, Meg – thanks for sharing this information. I think the confusion around the 4-month period between the first two shots and the booster is just a language issue. For those of us who got our vaccinations several months before the booster was available, it sounds like we could be considered out of compliance with the 4-month requirement. But that 4-month period only applies to those who are recently vaccinated, and may not yet have the booster. Anyone who has two approved vaccinations, plus the booster, should be eligible for the Passe Sanitaire at this time. Correct?

Hi Meg, I am traveling from NY to Paris arriving March 8. I’m fully vaccinated and boosted within the equivalence requirements for the pass sanitaire for travelers coming from the US. I would like to get the pass sanitaire shortly after arrival. I’ve tried searching on the Sante.Fr website for locations near where I’m staying (near the Bastille) that can provide the attestation d’equivalence vaccinal but only come up with pharmacies, doctor’s offices, etc. that can administer the vaccine. Are there particular places one needs to go or can most pharmacies do this? Thanks very much for your help!

When I click on the map now, for the pharmacies to convert our vaccination cards into a French Health pass, I only see 3 or 4 pharmacies in the entire Paris region. Have they reduced the number of pharmacies that are offering this service? Or am I missing something?
We are family of 6 traveling in June 2022 from the US (but arriving from Cairo) with completed Moderna and Pfizer vaccines and boosters.

Thank you so much for laying it all out there and explaining it so well. I’ve been doing some research about what is required. My wife has received 2 Pfizer vaccines, last one in April 2021. We know she needs a booster for our upcoming trip, but I came across this:
“Since February 1st, 2022, in order to continue to be considered as fully vaccinated, persons aged eighteen or over wishing to enter the national territory must have received a booster dose no later than 9 months following the injection of the last required dose.”
With this new requirement, does she need to start over or just get a booster? I wasn’t really able to find anything indicating what to do if it’s been more than 9 months from her second dose. Thank you!!!!

The link on the sante.fr page now shows only 60 pharmacies, rather than the thousands before.
I’m wondering if that’s a glitch because some of the pharmacies shown are in tiny places while big cities show none. Anyone know?

Whew! Thank you for such a clear explanation. I’ve been searching the web for days to get this information before traveling to France in April. One concern, the page that lists the pharmacies now only shows 8 in Paris. Have the other 1100 or so stopped the vaccination pass service? Do you know a participating pharmacy near the Saint-Michelle/Notre Dame metro? or near l’ile Saint Michel?

We would like to take care of this task when we first arrive on Air France from the US as we are taking a train to Bayeux a few hours after our arrival. My husband and I got our boosters in September 2021 before traveling to France that same month. We are thinking of returning.
We both received the health pass, via email along with the code to download our QR codes to put into our phones. We have since gotten new phones, and the french pass did not transfer. We still have the emails with the codes sent on the original email, however the site has since changed and an error message appears saying as such.
Is there a way to access our French Health Pass again? We would be traveling within the 9 month window before it expires

Hi Frank, there are fewer pharmacies open on Sunday but they are not all closed on Sundays. Google “Paris pharmacies open on Sunday” or use Google maps upon arrival to search for pharmacies near you and then click to see which ones are open.
So we encountered the same problem with the Janssen vaccine. We went to Paris in December, and we are going back in mid-March
We were able to do the online Tous Anti Covid QR codes for our first trip when the French online portal still allowed you to do it that way. My daughter and I both had two Pfizer doses, but my wife did the Janssen (she was part of a vaccine trial). We got our passes no problem, and they worked perfectly the whole time.
Between applying for our codes (October) and our trip (December) we were all boosted–my daughter and I with a third Pfizer dose, my wife with a Moderna shot to boost her Janssen.
While we were there in December we anticipated the new need for the app to be updated with a booster, so I went to a pharmacy to get the booster added to all of our passes. For mine and my daughters, it worked perfectly. It says Pfizer 3/3 in the app. Our two apps are still valid and ready to go.
However, for my wife it didn’t work. Hers just says Moderna 2/2, and it was deactivated. This appears to be the common problem.
The only solution that we see is for her to get an additional dose of Moderna tomorrow for our departure on March 11. She doesn’t care and is a teacher so no biggie. It’s tough because not everyone can get a de facto 4th shot, but that’s what we have decided to do.

I have some friends visiting from the US in mid March and everyone has their 3 doses aside from one friend. She tested positive for covid at the end of December before she was able to get her booster shot (she already has 2 doses of Moderna). She will be arriving in France 3 1/2 months after she tested positive so I am not sure she will qualify to get a booster before she comes over. I read somewhere that testing postive can count as your “3rd dose” so long as you bring proof that you had tested postive and another test showing you are now negative… does France allow this? Is there anything else she can do to receive the vaccine card once she’s here with only 2 doses and a positive covid case (now recovered)?

Great article! I am lucky enough to have the French certificate already for my first 2 vaccines, but no way to add the booster (all from California). My last trip was through CDG to Pau. I would certainly like to hear from anyone who got help from a CDG pharmacy. Last time I don’t see how I would have been able to board the regional carrier without the Tous Anti Covid app pass which 4 months ago was current. I usually only have 3-4 hours at CDG.

I have had 2 Janssen shots- one in April 2021 and a booster dose 11/16/21. My niece will be with me and had her Janssen shots in June 2021 and a booster on 1/11/22. We would both be under the 4 months required for a booster; however I’m worried they won’t recognize the Janssen booster since the rules require an mRNA booster as of Feb. 1. Hello! I got my J&J dose in April 9th, 2021, then I got my booster shot of Pfizer in December 21, 2021. That is just over 8 months apart. First J&J then Pfizer, a mix and match. I will be traveling to Paris March 6th. Am I still eligible to just show up at a pharmacy in Paris and get my health pass from the app? But my brother received one Janssen shot and also a Janssen booster last December. We can’t get another booster with a mRNA vaccine for him here in Brazil. I am supposed to be traveling to France from NY on 2/14/22 but I arrive on 2/15/22.
I have received my 2nd Pfizer dose on 9/13/21. I have not gotten boosted.
If I get my booster on 2/11/22, before leaving to France, will this be an issue since I did not get booster within the four months of getting my second dose?

I was double vaccinated with Pfizer in July last year.
I booked my travel to France mid March, I was about to go getting my booster shot last week and… I got sick with Covid the day before the shot.
Everyone including my doctor highly recommend for me to wait at least 3 months before taking the booster shot.
Would I be able to get my vaccine certificate with my primary series plus a recent recovery certificate?

Good morning. I’m hoping you know the answer to this as I am seeing conflicting info on various websites and a bit unclear on the France government site. My daughter is hoping to travel from Canada to France and Spain with me June 2022. She will have had her booster well before that time. However – there was almost a year between her second shot and her booster. Does that make it so that she can’t get the health pass?

I am planning a trip to Paris in the beginning of March and am getting information on how to get the health pass. I had 2 Pfizer dozes in 2021 and my Moderna booster Jan 2022, so I think I am fine to get the pass when I need it. My concern is my friend that will be newly vaccinated using moderna (over 14 days after 2nd dose) in the beginning of March. Do we need to reschedule so she can get a booster for the new booster requiremnet to get the health pass?

I’ve read the booster is only good for 7 months before entry into France. I’m bit a bit confused about the 7 months expiry of the booster.
I’m entering France on the 1st August 2022 for a 4 week trip. I’ve had my booster on 14th January so I get in by a few weeks. Am i at risk of the ‘pass sanitaire’ expiring whilst I’m in France.
Also my brother who had his booster on the 14th Dec 2021 misses out. Will he require a 2nd booster shot before then.
I’m hoping that the 7 months is only relevant for current entry into France and that by July a clearer picture will emerge.

I tried to send my booster information through my health pass account, but that doesn’t seem possible and they haven’t responded to my questions. Does this mean the certificate we received will not be valid an we’ll need to go to a pharmacy when we arrive?

How do they handle the case of someone who had their first shot dec 2020 second shot jan 2021 and booster in sept 2021? I got my shots before the general public because I’m a healthcare worker and got my booster as soon as I was eligible. But more than 7 months elapsed between my second mRNA shot and my 3rd. I’m confused about the booster requirements. I received my Pfizer booster in late September, 2021, less than 7 months after my 2nd shot. My husband received his booster in early November, 8 months after his 2nd shot. We are both over 65 and will be in France from March 22-May 1. I had my first two Moderna vaccines in the US, and my booster in France (Pfizer) in October.
The first two vaccines are registered in the tousanticovid app with a QR code. When I got the booster, the Mairie told me that they did not know how to add the third vaccine to the app so it shows 3/3, and thought that I would have to redo the whole thing. At the time this did not matter as three vaccines were not required. I am returning to France next week. Do you think the Pharmacy will be able to take my US vaccine card, the paper attestation of the booster, and load all into the app? Many Thanks

I am hopeful that you can address my situation. My wife, son and I are traveling to Paris mid May through early June, 2022. We are from the US. We have all had the Pfizer vaccine: 1st dose, 2nd dose and Booster. I am over 65; all others are under 65.
Facts: I am over 65 and had my 1st dose of Pfizer on January 26, 2021; my 2nd dose of Pfizer on February 17, 2021; and my Booster dose of Pfizer on December 15, 2021. I consider myself fully vaccinated.
Question: My question pertains to the reference of “7 months” in the French Health Pass literature. It is confusing. It was 10 months between my 2nd Pfizer dose (2/17/21) and my Pfizer Booster dose (12/15/21). Since I have had my Booster Pfizer dose, does the 7 month period affect my getting a French Health Pass?

Hi Jeffery, I don’t think the phone can hold multiple passes, no. But you can carry a printed paper pass sanitaire (the pharmacy gives a paper one initially that you can scan to upload into the phone app if you don’t want to carry it around. Hello. I am à franco-American living in Brittany… My American brother and sister-in-law are arriving February 6 into Roissy cdg airport from the us. They booked a train to Rennes which leaves from the airport a few hours after arrival. This was all booked before the vaccine passport was voted. Now that it’s coming into effect tomorrow, I can’t find any information regarding pharmacies within the airport that would convert their vaccine cards (they are boosted) into the new vaccine pass… im worried they will lose a day and have to cancel their train, go to a pharmacy downtown Paris the next morning (a monday) and book a new train from Montparnasse… it seems so complicated, especially since they don’t know the country, only speak a little French, etc. I wish (and hope!) the airport would be able to provide that service so they can take their original train and get to me the day they arrive. If anyone has any useful information or advice I would be so grateful… many thanks.

I am traveling to Paris from Los Angeles, arriving April 13 and 4 days later heading to London, Gibraltar, Malaga, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Nuremberg and Luxembourg before returning to Paris. Then returning home via New York City May 6.
I am triple vaccinated with Pfizer, last shot October 12. I assume the 7 months requirement after my 2nd shot last February is overridden by my Booster in October. Right?
My questions: Will I still have to have a negative rapid test 24 hours before leaving the States for Paris, and will my Health Pass be accepted in all the cities indicated, including London and Gibraltar, which are no longer part of the EU?

Hi Michael, it sounds like a wonderful trip. For the moment, being boosted is the only requirement and it doesn’t matter how much time has elapsed since they are not requiring anything beyond one booster. Your question about the 24 hour rapid test to get into the States is a rule made by the US and there’s no way to predict what their requirements will be in April. No, your hotel will not require this, nor will local transport (taxi or subway) from the airport to the hotel.
Thank you so much for providing all of this helpful information! I was able to get my health pass sanitare in CDG airport terminal 2F which was super convenient. Locating the pharmacy took some time- but that was because I was going in the wrong direction. Once located; the process took about 5 minutes. They took my passport and vaccination card and provided me with an EU certificate physical card as well as a print out. It was 40 euros. I only stayed in Paris for a day- and then went on to Norway. They verified my documents prior to my flight to Tromso- and there were no issues. Overall I would recommend getting it done in airport if you have opportunity.

I’m planning on travel from the USA. Once the health pass is obtained it will need to be reissued every 72 hours, correct? I am fully vaccinated with a booster. Will I need to take a rapid test at the pharmacy before it’s initially issued? And then again in 72 hours before reissue? Confused on if a rapid test will need to be given before QR can be obtained.

Hi Yvette, you do not need to reissue the health pass every 72 hours, no. It’s good for many months. And you do not need a rapid test to get it. It’s based on your vaccine status, not a test.

The pass isn’t good indefinitely because they continue to add requirements as time goes on, like adding the requirement for a booster by January 15. We assume that this will continue over time as new public health recommendations come into place. My understanding is that the pass sanitaire works in all other countries of Europe. -Meg

–That’s correct, Ryan! You need the pass sanitaire when trying to enter restaurants, museums, and long-distance trains. You don’t need it to enter the country, take a taxi, or take the subway. So you can arrive and get settled and then head out to a pharmacy to do the conversion on the first day or before you want to visit places that required the pass – Meg

I’m wondering if anyone else has run into a peculiar issue with getting their pass sanitaire after getting a Janssen booster shot. I had my booster in November and while the pass reflects that I now have shots 2/2, according to EU guidance it should show 2/1 as the convention. Because of this difference my pass is about to expire (after 2months) despite my having gotten a booster shot. No on one in the French pharmacies I’ve gone to know what to do about it. The problem is that very shortly I my pass will expire even though it shouldn’t based on the rules laid out by France and the EU. Any thoughts would be hugely appreciated.

-Hi Tarek, I witnessed this first hand when a friend who had Janssen (and a booster) visited last week. I took him to the pharmacy to do the conversion and there was no problem initially uploading his new QR code pass into the app. It worked the first time we showed it at a restaurant, and then not the next time. We deleted the uploaded pass and re-uploaded from the same paper QR code and once again it worked the first time and then not again. When it didn’t work it would say “not valid!” and we’d get a tsk-tsk from the employee and would have to explain that Janssen only has one shot, and the second shot is a booster, and “here look at these dates.” It was a pain and clearly frustrating for the employees because it so obviously says “not valid” but actually is. After a few days of this I told my friend to skip the pass sanitaire because the blinking “not valid!” message was worse than just showing the vaccination card. He showed his paper vaccination card in five places (with ID) and explained with words that Janssen is only one shot and the most recent booster was in December and so all was fine. It worked every time but was annoying. In short, the pass sanitiare is not at all set up to deal with Janssen. That was the best work around that we were able to find. Hope that helps! – Meg

Hi Jane, I just took a TGV from Paris to Rennes and they did not check my pass sanitaire to board. But on the return trip from Rennes to Paris they definitely checked. I have not yet heard about options for converting the pass at the airport (which is disappointing), since this is currently all pharmacy based. From my perspective, your options are to change your train ticket to depart from Paris instead of CDG and to go straight to Paris and find a pharmacy and then leave from Paris-Montparnasse…. -or- to take your chances trying board the TGV from the airport, armed with your vaccination card, your passport, and a giant smile. Either they won’t check or they’ll understand that you haven’t converted yet, or they’ll deny you and you’ll have to come to Paris, convert your pass, and book another train from Montparnasse. That’s just my personal advice and I’m sorry there’s not a more obvious solution. – Meg

I am an American who has been traveling for several months. I am currently in Spain and want to enter France, but I am concerned about the booster requirement that starts there Jan 15. In addition to my CDC card that shows proof of my double Pfizer vaccination in April, I received a booster shot in Scotland last month. But they won’t document it because I am not a citizen. I’m not opposed to getting another booster if that is the only way to travel in France. If I enter France before Jan 15, can I get a booster somewhere there, and then take that proof to a pharmacy for a pass sanitaire? If so, where can a US citizen get a verifiable booster in France? Any other advice?

Hi Lourdes, you’re right that France is still insisting (for the pass sanitaire, not to enter the country) on no more than 7 months from the last vaccine (2/2 for Pfizer/Moderna or 1/1 for Janssen) regardless of what country you’re in or if vaccine boosters are available to you there. They really don’t want un-boosted people in enclosed spaces like restaurants, museums and long-distance trains. Perhaps you can wait to travel until you’re boosted? -Meg

I am traveling to France January 22nd and have tickets to the opera January 23rd. I have the two doses of the moderna vaccine in the USA the second of which was given 9-30-21. And I have two doses of the Sinovac vaccine issued in the Dominican Republic before that.
According to the CDC I need to wait 6 months to get a booster shot from the moderna vaccine. Therefore I am not supposed to get a booster shot until March 30th 2022.
According to the french rules after January 15th 2022 they will require proof of a booster shot as well as a vaccine. I would hate to miss the performance because of a problem with my pass sanitaire. Will they give me one without the booster shot? Is there any delay when I go to the pharmacy to get the QR code? As I’m arriving on the 22nd and attending a performance on the 23rd at 2:30PM I am worried that I’ll have enough time to get the pass from a pharmacy.

Hi Ilene, at this time, there is no way to update anything remotely. You would need to go to a pharmacy to update your pass with your booster shot upon arrival. But chances are good that this process will change 5 times between now and June, so I recommend checking back or doing further research in May.

Hi Mateo, our understanding is that Sinopharm is not accepted as a vaccine in France. “Only vaccines authorised by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) will be accepted, i.e. Pfizer (Comirnaty), Moderna, AstraZeneca (Vaxzevria) and Johnson & Johnson (Janssen),” the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs points out.”

You should be fine to get a pass sanitaire because your 2nd shot was less than 7 months ago. Hi Miggie, I’m in the same situation myself and will be asking this week. I’m guessing that I *will* have to pay a fee in order to get a scannable certificate to add my booster shot to the TousAntiCovid app. The pharmacy still has to take time to process the request so it makes sense they would charge. But also remember, if you are under 65 years old, the rule requiring a booster (7 months after the second shot) do not go into effect until January 15. So, depending on when you are traveling, you may not need anything more than your existing pass sanitaire.

What happens if you already had your vaccine card converted to an EU Health Pass? Do you have to pay for an updated pass after showing your booster at the pharmacy?
Our understanding is that once you convert and get this digital scannable pass sanitaire that it will work anywhere in the EU.
That must be very frustrating, May. You’re right that travelers aged 65 and over need to have the booster in order to qualify for a pass sanitaire. I’d recommend trying to convert it at a pharmacy anyway, and if that doesn’t work, you can take your Canadian vaccine papers around with you (plus ID) and hope that people let you in. This is a tough situation. If you learn more, would you report back and let us know?

There is no expiration date to the pass sanitaire. However, requirements may change over time (for example a booster shot is required by January 15), so additional steps may be required over time. But you definitely don’t need to renew it every three days!

I am not eligible to obtain the booster(3rd shot) in Ontario since my 2nd dose was Aug 24th(less than 6 months). I will land in Paris on Dec 16, 2021. Do you know if I’ll be able obtain the Health pass in Paris? The sites I’ve visited are not clear about this. Appreciate any information you can provide. Thank you.
