Le Jardin de Cheval Blanc

Le Jardin de Cheval Blanc rooftop restaurant in Paris

Le Jardin de Cheval Blanc is an ephemeral restaurant on the roof of the Cheval Blanc hotel that runs from June 2 to October 1. The space is lush with trees and other plantings, and the red and white theme – which extends from the table settings to the staff uniforms – feels like holiday. The red theme also extends to the food – Arnaud Donckele (the chef of the three-star restaurant downstairs) supposedly collaborated with chef William Béquin to create the tomato and strawberry themed menu. And by theme, we mean that EVERY dish contains tomato or strawberry. Tomato fatigue sets in after the second or third plate that’s built around the ingredient, so I don’t recommend ordering a lot of food. It’s a weird menu that rambles between non-sensical categories like “les farinages” (flour-based foods) and it’s egregiously expensive. A slim portion of sea bass without accompaniments is 48€, and the cheapest rosé (that will run you 15€ at the grocery store) is marked up to 105€. If you’re concerned about money, or ingesting food, this isn’t a place for you. If your budget allows, I recommend coming here for a drink and a nibble early before eating a real meal somewhere else. Or come during a heat wave when chilled tomato soup and a rooftop breeze are the best things imaginable.
